Learn About Culture Through Food

One of the best ways to learn about a culture and some of its traditions is through traditional foods. If you live somewhere you get lots of time to try your way through a lot of different dishes. But when you’re on vacation it can be quite hard knowing what to try to get the full experience.

I recently discovered this Portuguese restaurant that offers an all-you-can-eat menu with lots of different Portuguese dishes. If you want to try your way through the traditional Portuguese cuisine this is the place for you to visit! (It’s also amazing to take visiting family and friends there if you want to give them a Portuguese food experience).

The Restaurant

The restaurant is called “Bairrices” and it’s located around 5 minutes away from Cais do Sodré (one of the main train stations in Lisbon). The restaurant itself is a bit hidden because it is located in a courtyard. To get to the restaurant you have to walk through a small corridor. It’s super beautiful to sit outside, especially during the warmer months.

In this restaurant, the only thing you can order from the menu is the drinks. The food is a set menu. We paid around 22 Euros (excluding drinks) per person for this all-you-can-eat Portuguese Tapas experience. The price includes 22 Portuguese dishes/tapas and 6 different desserts. You can ask for a refill of all the different dishes.

What’s on The Menu?

The dinner started with bread, olives, some charcuterie and dips and these amazing fried black chorizo with goat cheese.

From there we slowly received one dish after another. It was amazing to see the diversity in the Portuguese kitchen and it was awesome to try a lot of traditional Portuguese food all in one evening. A note to vegetarians: a lot of the dishes do contain meat or fish though, however, there are also options with just vegetables and since it’s all you can eat, you can always ask for more of certain dishes.

Sidenote: I personally love buffets or experiences like these because it allows me to try my way through many different dishes and I don’t have to decide what I want to order. It’s also super helpful if you have no idea about Portuguese food.

My favourite part of all was for sure the dessert. There were 6 different types and after we tried all of them we were able to order more of the ones we liked (my favourite one was the Panna Cotta, which was served with jam).

Overall you get a lot of food for the price and it’s a great experience to try different foods. The staff was super attentive and also explained the different dishes. So I’ve you’re curious about traditional Portuguese food this is a great experience!
