About Me

Slow Travel with Me

Hello there! Welcome to theslowtravelista! My name is Angela and as you can guess I love to travel (duh this is a travel blog after all). Although I love city trips and doing some fun sightseeing I’m an even bigger fan of slow travel (hence the name theSlowTravelista).

If you’re wondering what slow travel exactly is, you can find a more in-depth explanation here. If you don’t have the time to read or are feeling lazy (don’t blame you if you are, we’ve all been there ;D ) here’s a shortened version:

Slow travel or immersive travel is an alternative to mainstream mass tourism. For some people, it means focusing on more sustainable ways of travelling. For other people – including me – it means connecting more in-depth with a culture. Basically to eat what locals eat, shop where they shop and learn what makes their culture unique.

Slow travel also means staying in one place longer than your typical one or two-week vacation. So far I had the opportunity to live in California, England, South Korea and Portugal each for a little while. And I enjoyed every second of it. I hope in the future I get to live in even more places. Discover their cultures and make friends from all over the world.

So tag along to learn about slow travel and food tips, find some inspiration or read about my travel shenanigans.

3 Fun Facts About Me

As promised, travelling is not the only thing I care for (I mean it’s 2022 – when this was written – our personality is not defined by only one thing).

1. I Love to Change My Hair.

This is probably not one of the first things I tell people but I’m pretty reckless with my hair. I like to change my hair often, sometimes I let professionals do it and sometimes I ruin it myself (oops). From black to blonde, pixie to long I had it all (not all of it looked great though). There were some occasional accidents, some home bleach that didn’t go as planned and some spontaneous late-night hair colouring (with box dye in languages I don’t speak) Sometimes I’m lucky and it looks great, other times its only benefit is to entertain friends and family and give them a good laugh. So far I haven’t really cut my hair myself yet – but who knows what will happen in the future.

2. I Hitchhiked Across the Scottish Highlands

(Okay sorry, this is a travel-related fact. But I promise it’s fun)
When I was 19, my cousin and I visited around 7 countries in Europe on an Interrail trip. In Scottland, we tried to rent a car, but since we were both still fairly young and had our driver’s licence for only a few years we were not able to get a car. We were very determined to see the Scottish Highlands so we decided to hitchhike all the way up to the Isle of Skye and back. We met so many great people that took us along the way. Some of them were locals from whom we learned more about the areas (one even did a little detour to show us a castle) Some were tourists themselves and probably felt sorry for us and our big backpacks standing at the side of the street. Anyway, to this day this is still one of my favourite travel memories ever!

3. I Am a Foodie

What’s better than trying amazing food? Trying amazing food from other countries! I love to eat, cook and bake. It’s so exciting to try new culinary dishes when you travel. I don’t mind ordering things that I have no idea what it is. Who doesn’t like a fun little adventure 😉 And sometimes it turns out better than you think (Yes pigs feet I’m talking about you. They sound kinda gross but are actually the best thing ever). And when you come home from travelling you got a ton of new recipes to try! (Some might turn out amazing and some won’t but it’s the thought that counts, right?).

But not bad dad jokes, please.
